Title:
Neutronics and Nuclear Experiments for Fusion Design
Speaker: Lee Packer
Speaker's Biography
[A person in a suit Description automatically generated]Lee Packer is an internationally recognised leader in Nuclear Science and Technology with 25 years of experience spanning research and industrial sectors. As a UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) Fellow since 2023, his activities focus on applied research in neutronics, nuclear forensics, radiation detection technologies, and metrology-key areas critical to advancing nuclear technologies, particularly fusion. Beside his role at the UKAEA, he is presently undertaking a part-time role at the IAEA within the Physics Section consulting on fusion topics. Packer holds an Honorary Professor position at the University of Birmingham where he provides lectures for the longest established Masters degree course on nuclear topics within the UK, running since 1956, on the Physics and Technology of Nuclear Reactors. Packer has made significant contributions to the field through innovative approaches in neutron transport, nuclear detection systems, and measurement techniques. His work supports domestic and international nuclear programmes, shaping advancements in fusion neutronics and radiometric science. He previously led the Applied Radiation Technology Group at UKAEA for over a decade, managing a team of 20 researchers engaged in cutting-edge fusion and radiometric research. Earlier in his career, Packer worked in neutron spallation science, neutron detection technologies, fission and defence sectors. He has over 100 scientific publications and an h-index of 25. His achievements are recognised by Fellow membership of the Institute of Physics.

In this webinar, we will explore the pivotal role of neutronics in advancing the development of fusion power plants. Neutronics is fundamental to several core aspects of plant design, including the assessment of nuclear heating in components, tritium breeding efficiency, and the activation levels of in-vessel materials. It also provides critical support to safety and engineering disciplines by delivering essential data, such as the estimation of material damage rates to predict component lifetimes, evaluation of radiological doses for personnel and equipment, and the prediction of radioactive waste generation during operations.
A robust predictive framework for neutronics relies on three essential components: advanced methods (codes and tools), accurate models (geometry and material fidelity), and qualified nuclear data (a repository of experimental and theoretical physics knowledge). These elements require rigorous verification and validation, including fusion-relevant benchmark experiments, to ensure reliability. Additionally, this webinar will discuss recent advancements in the UK, showcase illustrative case studies, and highlight ongoing international collaborative efforts that drive innovation in the field.
