🔆 Meningitis signs 🔆
#Brudzinski’s and #Kernig’s_signs are clinical tests used to help diagnose meningitis, particularly in cases where the meninges are inflamed.
#Brudzinski’s Sign:
- Procedure : The patient lies flat on their back. The clinician gently lifts the patient’s head and neck, flexing the neck toward the chest.
- Positive Sign : If this movement causes the patient to involuntarily bend their knees and hips, it is considered a positive Brudzinski’s sign. This reflexive motion occurs because of irritation in the meninges
#Kernig’s Sign:
- Procedure : The patient lies flat on their back with the hip and knee flexed at 90 degrees. The clinician then attempts to straighten the patient’s leg at the knee while the hip is still flexed.
- Positive Sign : If this movement causes pain in the lower back or resistance to straightening the leg, it is considered a positive Kernig’s sign. This pain or resistance results from the irritation of the meninges and the nerve roots.
