Neurotransmitters
Definition :
Neurotransmitters are often referred to as the body’s chemical messengers. They are the chemical substance used by the nervous system to transmit messages between neurones, or from neurones to muscles .
Types of Neurotransmitters
•Excitatory neurotransmitters
•Inhibitory neurotransmitters
Functions of neurotransmitters :
Neurotransmitters transmit signals from nerve cells to target cells. These target cells may be in muscles, glands, or other nerves.
The brain needs neurotransmitters to regulate many necessary functions, including:
• Heart rate
• Hreathing
• Sleep cycles
• Mood
• Appetite
• Muscle movement.
Classifications neurotransmitters :
1. Amino acids:
• Glutamate
2. Amino acid derivatives:
• Catecholamines
( dopamine, adrenaline and noradrenaline ).
• Serotonin
• Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA).
3. Neuropeptides:
• Acetyl choline
