A Cry in Silence: Execution of 621 Baloch Citizens Amid Discrimination and Injustice in Iran’s Prisons Over Eight Years
Baloch Activists Campaign| The execution of Baloch citizens in Iran is a critical and controversial issue that has drawn the attention of human rights defenders and international organisations. According to statistics gathered by the Baloch Activists Campaign, at least 621 Baloch citizens have been executed in Iran’s prisons between 2017 and 2024.
However, the actual number is likely higher, as many cases have not been publicly reported. Among those executed, 19 individuals were sentenced to death on political and security-related charges.
Beyond its legal and political dimensions, this statistic raises serious concerns about criminal justice, ethnic discrimination, and human rights violations against a Baloch ethnic in Iran.
The execution of 621 Baloch citizens over nearly seven years translates to an average of 77 executions per year. This alarming figure, particularly the 19 individuals executed on political and security charges, underscores the sensitivity and complexity of the issue.
Many of these cases have been tried in courts whose independence and transparency are seriously questioned by human rights organisations.
The security-related and political charges against these individuals often include accusations such as “enmity against God” (Moharebeh), “corruption on earth” (Efsad-e-Fil-Arz), or “collaboration with anti-regime groups”.
However, the lack of concrete evidence, denial of access to independent legal representation, and unfair trials have raised grave concerns about the legitimacy of these accusations and sentences.
Baloch Minority: Systemic Discrimination and Unequal Treatment
The Baloch people, an ethnic minority in Iran, primarily reside in Sistan and Baluchestan province and other regions. They have long faced economic, social, and political marginalisation. Data indicate that Baloch citizens are disproportionately executed compared to other ethnic groups in Iran.
Many analysts believe that this high rate of executions reflects systemic discrimination and repressive policies against the Baloch minority. Security-related charges are often used as a pretext for severe crackdowns on Baloch political and social activists, as well as individuals advocating for their fundamental rights.
The widespread execution of Baloch citizens has not only had a devastating impact on the community but has also widened social divisions and deepened distrust between the government and the Baloch population.
