It perfectly illustrates the extreme infantilization of European leadership that has led us to our current predicament. Instead of seeing America distancing itself as an opportunity to finally develop genuine strategic autonomy, these people react like abandoned toddlers.
The reality is that this "common value base" Heusgen mourns was always more about European submission to US interests than actual shared values. Vance and other Trump appointees are in many ways doing Europe a favor by pulling the wool from over Europe's eyes.
The correct reaction isn't weeping. Anger at being taken for a ride would be appropriate, or at least determination to restore European dignity by building what we should have built decades ago - genuine strategic autonomy. Instead, Heusgen's tears complete our humiliation: excluded from deciding our own future, bearing others' costs, and publicly crying about it.
Absolutely pathetic.
