The Prophet ʿalayhi al-salam was born to Āmina bt. Wahb b. ʿAbd Manaf b. Zuhra b. Kilab.

His parents share a common lineage that can be traced back to Kilab. His given name is Hakim, although additional sources suggest it may be ʿUrwah. He gained a reputation for hunting with a pack of dogs and was thus nicknamed "Kilab."
