Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 27, 2020 is:

🔍dexterous • \DEK-strus\ • adjective

1 : mentally adroit and skillful : clever

2 : done with mental or physical skill, quickness, or grace : done with dexterity : artful

3 : skillful and competent with the hands

Examples:

As a shortstop, Alex is a dexterous fielder who is adept at catching any ground ball or line drive hit at him.

"And every single one of those weaves is done by hand. No loom is used—only dexterous fingers, sharp eyes and Zen-like concentration." — [Roff Smith, The New York Times, 22 July 2020]

❗️Did you know?

Dexterous comes from the Latin word dexter, meaning "on the right side." Since most people are right-handed, and therefore do things more easily with their right hand, dexter developed the sense of "skillful." English speakers crafted dexterous from dexter and have been using the resulting adjective for anyone who is skillful—in either a physical or mental capacity—since at least the early 1600s. The adjective ambidextrous, which combines dexter with the Latin prefix ambi-, meaning "both," describes one who is able to use both hands in an equally skillful way.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 26, 2020 is:

🔍repine • \rih-PYNE\ • verb

1 : to feel or express dejection or discontent : complain

2 : to long for something

Examples:

"All his journeys were ruggedly performed; for he was always steadfast in a purpose of saving money for Emily's sake, when she should be found. In all this long pursuit, I never heard him repine; I never heard him say he was fatigued, or out of heart." — [Charles Dickens, David Copperfield, 1850]

"For about half an hour I felt quite low in spirits because of Charley Heywood's unannounced departure, but I am not one to repine over matters that can't be helped." — [Dee Brown, Conspiracy of Knaves, 1987]

❗️Did you know?

In longing, one can "repine over" something ("repining over her lost past"), or one can "pine for" something. The two words, used thus, mean close to the same thing, but not exactly. Pining refers to intense longing for what one once knew. Repine adds an element of discontent to any longing—an element carried over from its sense "to feel or express dejection or discontent," which has been in use since the 16th century. Washington Irving used the earlier sense in his 1820 work The Sketch Book: "Through the long and weary day he repines at his unhappy lot." Pine and repine are from Old English pīnian ("to suffer") and probably ultimately from Latin poena ("punishment"). Poena also gave us pain.

🔍A past event or occurrence, often unfortunate, which cannot now be changed or undone and should therefore no longer be a source of concern.

Example 1:
We used to have big disagreements some years back, but that's all water under the bridge now. We get along fine.

Example 2:
I should have negotiated a higher salary when I was offered the job, but that's water under the bridge now.

Example 3:
When I was a child, I used to fancy myself being a sportsperson when I grew up, but that's water under the bridge. Now I am stuck at this mundane job.

Example 4:
Both parties agreed that their past disputes were water under the bridge and decided to work together towards a common goal.

❗️Origin:
The phrase originated around the early 1900s. It probably refers to the fact that water (of a river) flows constantly towards the sea and is not still, indicating that the water that has already flowed under the bridge will not return.

▪️Sweaty or uncomfortable

I don't like being hot and sweaty and uncomfortable.

We are 'sweaty' when we are really hot or when we exercise. Sweat is when water leaves your body through your skin. When we don't feel right or normal we feel 'uncomfortable.' Being uncomfortable can mean we are physically uncomfortable like too hot, too cold, sick, hungry or even emotionally uncomfortable like embarrassed. Notice the following:

▫️I'm sweaty because I just finished running.

▫️Is that chair uncomfortable?

▪️Go away

When it's hot, we usually go away on the weekends to relax.

When we take a trip or a vacation to a place we 'go away' there. Notice the following:

▫️You need to go away for a weekend.

▫️We go away for a little vacation every March.

▪️By the way

Where are you from, by the way?

We can use this phrase to add or ask for extra information that maybe is different than the subject we are talking about. Notice the following:

▫️She wants to meet you, by the way.

▫️By the way, where did you get that purse?

▪️Snowboarding

I go snowboarding in the winter.

'Snowboarding' is like skateboarding or surfing but on snow. Both of your feet are attached to a board and you turn by shifting your weight to the front and back. Notice the following:

▫️My body hurts from snowboarding yesterday.

▫️You have to try snowboarding this winter.

▪️Walk around

I walk around and enjoy the cold weather.

'Walking around' is walking without any destination. It is for exercise and experience. Notice the following:

▫️We should walk around the lake after dinner.

▫️She can spend hours walking around the mall and never buy anything.
