Dear Senator Menendez,
I hope you are well.
In the past, you have drawn attention to the case of prominent Iranian dissident rapper Toomaj Salehi on Twitter.
As you may know, he was abducted by the Islamic Republic on October 30th, 2022.
Since then he has been severely tortured and put in solitary confinement for at least 76 days.
Toomaj's deteriorating physical health warrants more attention by the international community - with credible reports highlighting some of the injuries he has sustained at the hands of the regime's agents:
- his leg and his fingers were broken
- his head and face were severely beaten
- one of his eyes is seriously damaged, which may result in loss of sight
His sponsor, German politician Ye-One Rhie, has also voiced her concern over Toomaj's eyesight and health.
Toomaj has always been the voice of Iranians - and his music and lyrics have for years highlighted the oppression Iranians are subjected to by the Islamic Republic, and most recently in this uprising.
The charges against Toomaj are baseless.
He is an artist who - like every human being - was merely exercising his inherent right of freedom of speech.
A value held dearly in the U.S..
He should be freed immediately, before the regime's judicial court can sentence him to death.
The silence of the international community will undoubtedly lead to continued violent crackdowns by the regime - and more executions of Iranians.
I urge you to use your prominent position to call for his release and with that, to stop the Islamic regime from taking yet another innocent human life.
Yours sincerely,
